Today, International Workers' Day, May 1, 2026, I received my first-ever payout from Airbnb for the little room at No. 4, Ben Tre 5 Street, Hoi An Ancient Town. My heart is quite joyful. Just a few hundred thousand, yet the feeling is so pleasant.<\/p>\n
All morning, as I cycled to the workshop, I kept asking myself: \u201cAm I really born just to be an architect? Is there any other job, one that suits me better, giving me a bit more time to take care of myself and my family?\u201d Listening to a podcast excerpt by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh while cutting some wild water spinach and looking around, I thought: \u201cHere will be a plum orchard, with a green carpet of grass underneath. I will walk barefoot on the soft grass.\u201d That would surely be better than wearing a hard hat, aggressively shouting that this is wrong, and stressing about the handover deadline the day after tomorrow...<\/p>\n
Idly wondering, \u201cI don't know how many times I've tried to clean up these ashes, which are basically construction waste, you know? And is this the last time?\u201d Every time I work on five projects for clients, a pile of construction debris inevitably pops up. For new builds, the waste consists of leftover bricks, sand, and stone after the rough construction phase, along with samples of everything from finishing tiles to furniture and interior details. For renovations, a mountain of stuff emerges from the old structure: protective iron frames, old wooden doors, outdated drop ceilings, and old decorative light fixtures with broken wiring. Et cetera. I believe that everything old has the price of being old. Moreover, for every part of construction waste generated, it's a part of the resources I've taken from the kids. Therefore, I must responsibly breathe another breath into these ashes, giving them a new lifecycle...<\/p>\n
So, one day, the first The-Nest-Studio was born, on the outskirts of the ancient town of Hoi An\u2014a warm home in Dien Phuong, where its very first guests were my own little family.<\/p>\n
So much gratitude for that blue house, where the Covid years passed by so sweetly. At 5:00 AM, I would sit daydreaming, watching the sky and clouds, and read at 6:00. The little ones, just rubbing their eyes and springing up, would also grab a book to read like their mom, even though some still didn't have all their teeth and didn't know a single letter. Haha. Then at 7:00, we had breakfast, drew together, and I showed my daughter her first brush strokes, how to mix secondary colors from the three primary colors\u2014blue, red, and yellow\u2014and how to transition shades from white to black... By 10:00, we made pizza together, baking all sorts of things. Then we repeated the morning cycle for the afternoon, though in reverse order: finishing the painting we started in the morning\u2014reading\u2014cooking. Usually in the afternoon, we added gardening and built a fire together to make a BBQ, grilling everything from sweet potatoes and homegrown corn to fish, shrimp, and squid; sometimes even a whole chicken or a huge pork leg... And now, every time guests stay and ask, \u201cWait, is there an artist in this house?\u201d, I just counter with a question: \u201cBetween the two of you, is either of you an artist?\u201d The answer is definitely yes, for both host and guest.<\/p>\n
Looking back on the past few years, I truly want the guests staying temporarily at my TheNest-Studio 01 to have similar experiences: gardening, working remotely, maybe painting like my kids or the two guests this past Tet; or just chilling with music like Mr. Garik.
